OT Praxis Toolkit
The OT Praxis Toolkit was developed by Tim Barlott, researchers from the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, and a group of occupational therapists to support ethical reasoning in complex practice situations. The toolkit helps practitioners navigate challenges related to social inequities and health injustices through reflection, dialogue, and action.
The toolkit combines a guidebook with hands-on materials that support individuals and teams to explore the social, political, and institutional factors shaping their work. Through a series of prompts and activities, users are encouraged to examine assumptions, identify underlying causes of inequity, and consider opportunities for action within their own practice contexts.
Action Lab supported the design and development of the toolkit, contributing visual design, material exploration, prototyping, and user experience design. Working alongside the project team, we helped translate a promising concept into a practical resource that can be used across a range of occupational therapy settings.
Grounded in the concept of praxis, the toolkit recognizes the ongoing relationship between how we understand the world and how we act within it. Rather than providing a single framework or set of answers, it supports an iterative process of reflection, learning, and practice.
